The Vermont Council for Rural Development sponsored the State House summit on December 10, 2010 of more than 300 people from agriculture, forestry, business, and public policy. The day highlighted the continuing crisis that is fragmenting the working landscape in Vermont and unveiled bold new steps to reverse this trend. The Summit also launched a new nonpartisan and broad-based partnership to support local agriculture and forestry, grow and attract farm and forest entrepreneurs, and conserve Vermont’s Working Landscape far into the future.

MONTPELIER, VT – A Summit on the Future of Vermont’s Working Landscape will be held at the Vermont State House on Friday, December 10. The event, hosted by the Vermont Council on Rural Development, will highlight the continuing crisis that is fragmenting the working landscape in Vermont and unveil bold new steps to reverse this trend.

USDA RD commissioned the Partners in Rural America (PRA) to build four regional ‘convenings’ to to share best regional and place-based practices and build strategic partnerships among state Rural Development offices and rural leadership organizations throughout the region. VCRD was commissioned as the Lead Convener and host of the Northeast Rural Summit, which we held in April 2010 in Burlington.

Summits In line with VCRD’s statutory role in policy coordination, VCRD Rural Summits were begun in 1996 to convene state and federal leaders and encourage their cooperative goal-setting and mutual investment in response to key rural priorities in Vermont. On Monday, Bruhn and a wide spectrum of experts instead planted more questions: Can we balance the environment and the economy? Spending for schools and seniors? The needs of natives and newcomers?

(Host) More than 500 Vermont leaders met at the University of Vermont on Monday to develop priorities for the future of the state.

The conference was the final part of a two-year study looking at whether Vermonters' values are reflected in state policies.

The Vermont Council on Rural Development asked leaders from business, nonprofit groups, education and government to consider questions raised during the study. They developed a series of recommendations in areas ranging from education to agriculture and forestry to economic development.
