Noah Carpenter, 5th grader at Fairfield Center School, is making the most out of the new Netbooks he and his classmates received from e-Vermont partner Digital Wish. Fairfield students not only have this tremendous asset to help with their school work, but also take their netbooks home where each is provided an accompanying Dell printer/scanner.

Fairfield, Vermont is synonymous with maple sugaring and dairy farming, and was the birth place of the 21st president of the United States, Chester Arthur. This Franklin County town of 1900 residents does not live in the past, however. Their library, the Bent Northrup Memorial, has a new building with several computer stations and wireless Internet access for personal computer use.

In one busy month Fairfield opened a beautiful new library, launched a community newsletter, and unveiled an online farmers market.

calendarBetween summer 2011 and spring 2012, e-Vermont will deliver an array of resources to improve Fairfield’s use of the Internet to achieve key community goals and welcome more citizens into the digital culture. Already, e-Vermont is working with the Fairfield Center School to bring 21st century educational opportunities to its students.

The E-Vermont Community Broadband Project was the only applicant East of the Mississippi to be awarded federal stimulus money for rural broadband. This week the project announced both advances of 2010 and the names of 12 rural communities chosen for next year. E-Vermont doesn’t lay fiber cable; instead, it offers small communities expert help in making the most of existing Internet technology. The 2010 projects included, for 5th graders in Bristol, VT, new computers, training in making podcasts, and better integration of technology into the school curriculum.

FAIRFIELD: Community settles on three priorities — Development of a farmer’s market, a buy-local program and ultimately a Fairfield brand were among the projects proposed when about 50 residents met Thursday night to help shape their town’s future. Among other priority projects were a school enhancement program, improved communications and coordination of community volunteers.
