Broadband is a tool for building citizen participation in all aspects of rural life, and a critical part of policy for economic, civic and community development in Vermont. However, in some regions of the state with new broadband service, ‘take rates’ or subscriptions are under 10 percent.

Vermont State Colleges (VSC)

Vermont State Department of Libraries

The Vermont State Department of Libraries is coordinating e-Vermont’s efforts to respond to local library needs and is administering grant funds designated for public libraries. Eligible libraries may use grant funds to develop public computing centers and other Internet-based library services by purchasing equipment (computers, scanners, printers), software and tech support, implementing library automation, or introducing new digital resources.

Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC)

An SBDC consultant will provide community small businesses advising and assistance in identifying Internet uses which address business needs, improve efficiencies and expand innovation and profitability.

Vermont Council on Rural Development

A VCRD Community Director will coordinate community efforts by providing on-the-ground leadership in communications, building local community teams and implementing priority projects.

The Vermont Council on Rural Development is leading a team of eight other non-profits who will work with rural communities around the state to improve the ways they use broadband, for everything from strengthening business plans to engaging more citizens in local government. Digital Wish (DW)

As a partner in e- Vermont, Digital Wish is bringing 1:1 computing to selected classrooms in 24 Vermont towns. 1:1 computing means a computer and internet access for every student and teacher in the participating classroom. Pairing this level of access with training and curriculum development has expanded opportunities in schools around the country through other 1:1 initiatives.
