BENNINGTON, Vt. - Surfing the Internet in Bennington is getting a whole lot easier.

A new Wi-Fi service is up and running downtown. The free access is part of an effort by Vermont's Council on Rural Development to get communities connected.

It's being paid for in part by federal grant money initially targeted toward communities hit hard by Tropical Storm Irene. The same project brought a Wi-Fi hot spot to Bethel about a year ago.

"They were devastated by the flood so having this new digital infrastructure is going to help them comeback even more and continue to thrive," said Caitlin Lovegrove of the Vermont Council on Rural Development.

Bennington will officially welcome the new Wi-Fi with a celebration Thursday at 7 p.m. on the town office lawn.
