The Vermont Digital Economy Project is designed to increase resilience and foster economic development in flood-impacted Vermont communities.

March 6, 2013 (MONTPELIER, VT) – The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) is excited to announce the hiring of three new staff members who will oversee the launch the Vermont Digital Economy Project (VDEP). The project, which was announced earlier this year by Governor Peter Shumlin and Vermont’s congressional delegation, is funded in large part by a disaster recovery grant from the Economic Development Administration.

MONTPELIER, VT – A coalition of lawmakers today delivered a “Dear Colleague” letter to the Vermont House and Senate Appropriations Committees, in support of the “five-by-three” investment for the Working Lands Enterprise Fund. The 66 legislators wrote, “We are confident of the return of this investment in maintaining the character of Vermont while building jobs for the future and encourage you to make investing in ‘5 by 3’ a key priority of this Legislative session.”

The day included an early morning presentation to the Rural Economic Development Working Group (REDWG), testimony in front of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, and a press conference in the Cedar Creek Room.

Media Advisory, January 18, 2013 ~ The Working Lands Enterprise Board solicited Letters of Intent (LOI) for two of three investment areas (Capital & Infrastructure, and Service Providers) and received 184 applications, for a total request of over $9 million, nine times the amount of funds available ($986,500). Due to this overwhelming response, the Working Lands Enterprise Board is unable to invite all LOI applicants to submit a full proposal and adjustments have been made to the LOI response timeline.

Peter Welch announced Friday that the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded Vermont a $1.8 million grant to help businesses, farms, towns and nonprofits use online resources to bolster disaster resiliency in the wake of Irene and other disasters that struck Vermont in 2011.

WASHINGTON — Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank today announced a $1.8 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to the Vermont Council on Rural Development of Montpelier, Vermont. The investment will help the state rebound economically from Tropical Storm Irene by supporting the Vermont Digital Economy Project, an initiative focused on integrating online tools into rural business strategies, community development, and economic development efforts.
